In a significant move to elevate Andhra Pradesh's maritime infrastructure and economic growth, the Union government has granted in-principle approval for the construction of a greenfield national highway connecting the Nizampatnam fishing harbor with the proposed Amaravati Outer Ring Road (ORR). This strategic development is expected to substantially improve marine exports, benefit coastal communities, and stimulate tourism in the region.
Research-Backed Planning and Route Proposals
After months of detailed research and analysis, the Center-appointed consulting firm has suggested four potential alignments for the highway. These alignments were proposed based on critical parameters such as distance efficiency, economic viability, and land acquisition costs. The proposed 48-kilometer stretch will require an investment of approximately ₹1,400 crore, out of which ₹300 crore is earmarked for land procurement and the remaining funds allocated for road and bridge construction.
Infrastructure Highlights: Bridges and ROB
To address the region's complex geography, the project will feature substantial infrastructure enhancements. The firm has recommended constructing a Rail Over Bridge (ROB) near the railway line close to Tsundur, along with high-level bridges at major canal crossing points. The highway will traverse 24 natural barriers, including rivers and canals, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity between the port and inland logistics hubs.
Boost to Marine Exports and Local Livelihoods
This ambitious highway is poised to be a game-changer for the underdeveloped coastal belts of Andhra Pradesh. By enabling faster and more efficient transportation of marine products from Nizampatnam harbor, the project is expected to help local fishermen secure better market prices and expand their reach to international markets. This, in turn, will enhance livelihoods and stimulate local economic growth.
