Expansion to Meet Growing Cargo Demand
Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport is set to undergo a major transformation with the construction of a new integrated freight terminal. This expansion is driven by a significant 35% growth in cargo traffic, highlighting the increasing demand for efficient cargo handling in the northeastern region. The new terminal aims to boost trade, facilitate exports and imports, and enhance supply chain efficiency for various industries, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce.
Features of the New Freight Terminal
The upcoming freight terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to streamline cargo operations and improve efficiency. Key features of the terminal include:
Increased Cargo Handling Capacity: The new facility will accommodate higher volumes of goods, supporting domestic and international trade.
Cold Storage Facilities: Dedicated sections for perishable goods, such as fresh produce, dairy, seafood, and pharmaceuticals, ensuring temperature-controlled transportation.
Automated Handling Systems: Integration of modern conveyor belts, robotic sorting systems, and barcode tracking to speed up cargo movement.
Enhanced Security Measures: Advanced screening systems, CCTV surveillance, and AI-based monitoring to ensure safe and secure transportation of goods.
Faster Customs Clearance: Digitalized documentation processes to reduce delays and expedite international shipments.
Strengthening Trade and Connectivity
With Assam emerging as a key trade gateway for Northeast India and neighboring countries, the development of the freight terminal is expected to improve connectivity with markets in Southeast Asia. This will benefit exporters and importers by reducing logistics costs and increasing supply chain efficiency. The airport will serve as a major hub for transporting agricultural products, handloom and handicraft goods, and industrial materials, thereby boosting the regional economy.
Infrastructure Upgrades for Better Operations
The expansion project at LGBI Airport is not limited to cargo facilities. A new integrated terminal building for passengers, scheduled for completion by April 2025, is also part of the development plan. This terminal will enhance the airport’s capacity, allowing it to handle approximately 10 million passengers annually. The modern facility will include:
