Strategic Initiative Unveiled
DP World, a leading global provider of smart end-to-end supply chain solutions, has officially launched the Bharat Africa Setu—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at doubling India-Africa trade. This strategic platform is being developed under the guidance of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Announced during the Dubai-India Business Forum in Mumbai, the initiative was unveiled by His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, in the presence of Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, and other dignitaries.
Strengthening South-South Cooperation
Bharat Africa Setu is more than just a trade platform—it is a visionary corridor aimed at fostering south-south cooperation and inclusive economic growth. By enhancing sea and air connectivity between India and Africa, the initiative will link ports, economic zones, and logistics parks operated by DP World across both continents. Indian businesses will now gain access to 53 African countries and tap into 260,000 points of sale, significantly enhancing their export footprint.
Infrastructure Meets Innovation
Combining efficient physical infrastructure with value-added trade services, Bharat Africa Setu offers a holistic trade ecosystem. Indian exporters will benefit from robust support in warehousing, trade finance, marketing, branding, logistics, testing, certification, and packaging services. The initiative also simplifies regulatory compliance, licensing, and government approvals—minimizing trade bottlenecks and accelerating market access.
A Massive Opportunity for Growth
Africa currently imports approximately USD 430 billion worth of goods, yet India accounts for just USD 28 billion, or 6.5% of that total. Bharat Africa Setu is poised to help India nearly double its share to 12% by 2030—a transformative leap for India’s export economy. The platform will also enable Indian manufacturers to introduce new product concepts to the African market, backed by seamless logistics and supply chain capabilities.
Government and Industry in Unison
Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal emphasized the strategic importance of Africa for India, stating:
“Africa holds immense promise as a strategic trade partner for India. To fully unlock this potential, it is essential to strengthen connectivity, reduce trade bottlenecks, and empower Indian businesses to access and thrive in Africa’s dynamic markets.”
